Ferrari has several models on the U.S. market for 2011-2012, including the 458 Italia and the California. It also offers the 612 Scaglietti, but it’s replacing this model with the Ferrari FF for the 2012 model year.
U.S. News and World Report ranks both the FF and the California among the top exotic sports cars alongside vehicles such as the Lamborghini Gallardo and Aventador.
The 2011 Ferrari California has a starting MSRP of $192,000, while the 458 Italia’s base price is $225,325. Other models in Ferrari’s lineup include the 458 Spider, the 599 GTB Fiorano, and the 599 GTO.

Ferrari Auto Insurance Rates
Since the production numbers for vehicles like the Ferrari California and the Ferrari 458 are so limited, reliable cost of ownership data for these vehicles is not available.
However, it is available for some luxury sports cars with slightly larger production numbers like the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes Benz SL Class.
According to Edmunds, a Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe, which starts at $160,700, costs typical owners about $3,180 per year. AOL Autos projects an annual auto insurance bill of $4,374 for the Mercedes SL and the typical auto insurance premiums for a Porsche Boxster run around $1,936.
Safety ratings aren’t available for limited production vehicles like the Ferrari.
2012 Ferrari FF
The innovative exotic 2012 Ferrari FF offers an intriguing blend of performance and utility that is new to the super luxury sports car world, U.S. News explains. It ranks the FF third in its class, along with the Audi R8.
The FF stands for Ferrari Four, which refers to its standard 4-wheel drive and 4-passenger seating arrangement.
U.S. News asserts that the FF’s seating capacity is best-in-class, but this doesn’t mean that it sacrifices much in the way of performance. The 2012 FF still features a powerful V12 engine that can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, and 200 km/h in 11 seconds.
Ferrari reports that the vehicle’s top speed is 335 km/h. One aspect of the FF that reviewers dislike is the somewhat awkward body styling that’s necessary to comfortably accommodate four passengers.
Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
Another V12 sports car on Ferrari’s menu is the 599 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta). Its performance specs match those of the Ferrari FF, and its max speed has been clocked at over 205 mph. Ferrari doesn’t skimp on interior luxury for the 599 GTB Fiorano, either.
Owners can personalize their vehicles by selecting racing options like carbon ceramic brakes, a cockpit rollbar, and four-point seat belts.
Other available upgrades for the Fiorano include a satellite navigation system, carbon-fiber interior detailing, sport seating, and a steering wheel-mounted LED display.

Ferrari California
While Ferrari categorizes its California model as a touring car, it still delivers plenty of get-up-and-go. The California’s 4.3 liter V8 takes it from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds, and reviewers say that while it handles well on the racetrack, it still offers a sufficiently comfortable suspension for daily driving.
The California also incorporates practical features like a retractable hardtop for year-round use, and a reasonable amount of cargo space if owners opt for the rear storage shelf option.
A small rear seating area is also available in lieu of the shelf, but reviewers say that it is cramped.
The Ferrari California’s navigation system gets poor reviews however. Testers say that the touch-screen’s resolution is behind the curve, and they expect better at this price point.
However, they say that it is relatively easy to use and the infotainment system incorporates up-to-date features like a hard drive for music storage.
The California’s poor fuel economy detracts from its overall practicality, though. The 2010 model is rated at just 13 mpg in city driving and 19 mpg in highway driving.
Ferrari 458 Italia
While earning critical acclaim has never been a problem for Ferrari, the 458 Italia has been particularly well-received by the world auto press. It picked up two “International Engine of the Year” awards for “Best Engine Above 4 Liters” and “Best Performance Engine.”
The Ferrari 458 also earned the “World Performance Car of the Year” title and the Robb Report’s “Car of the Year” designation. The Italia boasts awards from The New York Times, Top Gear Magazine, Auto Express, and the Daily Telegraph as well.
With its top speed clocked at over 202 mph (325 km/h), and a zero to 100 km/h acceleration time of under 3.4 seconds, reviewers’ enthusiasm seems justified. The 458 Italia’s V8 engine has a displacement of more than 274 cubic inches, and it generates 398 pounds per foot of torque.
Ferrari Facts and History
The Ferrari company was launched in Italy in 1929 by Enzo Ferrari, and it is headquartered in Maranello, Italy. In addition to the production cars described earlier, the company also introduces concept cars like the Ferrari Mythos, the Ferrari Modulo, and the Ferrari Millechili.
Ferrari unveiled a hybrid 599 concept car in 2010, and the company promises to have a hybrid vehicle in full production by the year 2015.
Ferrari sales worldwide have nearly doubled since 1999. The company reported sales of 3,775 that year, compared to a high of 6,587 in 2008. Total sales declined slightly to 6,250 in 2009. Ferrari’s main competitors in the U.S. are Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Mercedes Benz.
Aston Martin produces the DB9, and Mercedes markets the SLS AMG. Lexus also produces the LFA, which is also counted as a member of the exotic sports car class.
