The 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe is a super luxury sports car with an entry-level price tag of $90,500. This price represents an increase of more than $5,000 over the MSRP of the most recent 2010 BMW 6 Series model, but reviewers question whether it’s worth it.
U.S. News and World Report explains that both the 2010 and 2012 models will satisfy drivers who want a comfortable touring car, but they say that the upgraded V8 turbocharged engine in the 2012 6 Series doesn’t turn it into a true sports car.

If you’re after sheer power, U.S. News suggests that you test drive the Porsche 911 Carrera. However, the 6 Series could be a good fit if you’re in the market for a vehicle that combines a reasonably powerful engine with lots of luxury features.
BMW 6 Series Auto Insurance Rates
According to Motor Trend, the typical annual cost of auto insurance premium for a 6 Series BMW convertible is $2,689. This is just a bit higher than the National Automobile Dealers Association’s auto insurance estimate for the competing Jaguar XK, at $2,365 annually.
However, the 6 Series’ estimated auto insurance rate is slightly lower than the $2,889 annual estimate for the Mercedes Benz CL Class.
Rates for the high-performance Nissan GT-R and Dodge Viper are both much higher than the 6 Series, at $4,200 and $5,330 per year, respectively.
Considering that it is also a high-performance ride, the Porsche 911 Carrera’s auto insurance rates are relatively low at $2,840 per year, but they’re still somewhat higher than the 6 Series.
BMW 6 Series Warranty
BMW vehicles are warranted for four years or 50,000 miles, and the 2012 6 Series is no exception. Its warranty covers the vehicle bumper-to-bumper, including the drive train, and maintenance and roadside assistance are also included.
The 2012 6 Series is also warranted against corrosion for 12 years, regardless of its mileage.

BMW 6 Series Maintenance and Repair Costs
Most drivers put about 15,000 miles per year on their vehicles and Motor Trend projects that typical BMW 6 Series owners will see their warranties expire between three and four years after they purchase their vehicles.
The average driver will spend about $564 on repairs between the ends of the third and fourth years of ownership, and approximately $1,246 between the ends of the fourth and fifth years of ownership.
Motor Trend also estimates scheduled maintenance expenses of about $4,724 over five years for the 6 Series.
Fuel Costs for the 6 Series
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the 2012 BMW 6 Series’ fuel economy is 16 miles per gallon in city driving and 24 miles per gallon in highway driving. This compares well to the 13 mpg city/21 mpg highway rating for the competing Mercedes Benz SLK and the 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway rating for the Nissan GT-R.
The Porsche 911 Carrera gets better gas mileage than the BMW 6 Series, though, probably due to its smaller size. The Carrera boasts 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
BMW 6 Series Safety Features
It is common for the insurance industry and the federal government to forgo testing of high-end luxury vehicles like the BMW 6 Series.
This vehicle, like others in its class, has not been crash tested, but it does offer an extensive list of safety features. Standard features on the 2012 6 Series include an electronic rollover protection system, traction control, brake assist, and electronic stability control.
There’s also tire pressure monitoring and an emergency trunk release. Night vision is optional, while daytime running lights and side head air bags are not available at all.
This luxury sports coupe’s xenon headlights incorporate several high-tech features, including self-leveling and cornering capabilities. The front seats feature active head restraints, which help to prevent whiplash in rear collisions by supporting the driver’s and front passenger’s heads.
There’s also an active knee protection feature to shield the driver’s knees in the event of a crash.
BMW includes a 4-year subscription to its Assist Safety Plan with most new BMWs. This package includes safety features like emergency assistance request, automatic collision notification, and stolen vehicle recovery service.
Performance Features for the BMW 6 Series
The newest 2012 BMW 6 Series features a turbocharged V8 engine that delivers 400 horsepower. It features a rear-wheel drivetrain and it comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission, although an 8-speed manual version is available.
The 2012 6 Series also incorporates sport suspension and Servotronic power steering that adjusts steering assistance to accommodate the speed at which the vehicle is traveling.
Interior Features for the BMW 6 Series
The 6 Series features the luxury appointments that BMW drivers have come to expect: comfortable leather bucket seats with optional heating and cooling capability, a rear parking aid, and a deluxe sound system.
The seats and the heated power mirrors are equipped with a memory function to easily accommodate different driver profiles, and keyless entry, push-button ignition, and a trip computer are all standard.
The leather sport steering wheel provides access to cruise control, audio, and Bluetooth at your fingertips.
The vehicle’s tech features are also expanded in the latest 6 Series model. Though the iDrive infotainment system still receives complaints from reviewers about its complexity (as does the COMAND system from Mercedes), tech-savvy drivers will enjoy a 10.2-inch LED screen with a voice-activated navigation system.
The 9-speaker sound system can broadcast HD Radio and play CD and MP3 formats.
