Reviewers point to the Saab 9-5 upscale sedan as an example of Saab getting back to its roots after an unsuccessful period under General Motors’ ownership.
They say that the V6 Saab 9-5 is powerful and luxurious enough to compete with large luxury cars like the Mercedes E Class and the Audi A6; however, the 4-cylinder base model Saab 9-5 is priced to hold its own against midsized sedans like the Volvo S60 and the BMW 3 Series.
Read on to learn more about how much auto insurance and other necessities for the 2011 Saab 9-5 cost, or type your zip code in the box on this page for personalized auto insurance quotes!
Saab 9-5 Auto Insurance Rates
According to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), experienced drivers can anticipate paying around $1,382 in auto insurance premiums annually for a Saab 9-5s.
The NADA considers “experienced” drivers to be those with driving histories longer than six years.
Less experienced drivers with just three to six years’ experience can expect to pay nearly double that rate, about $2,581 annually for full coverage auto insurance.
Upgrading to a higher level trim like the Turbo4 Premium will only increase your auto insurance rates slightly. The NADA projects that drivers will pay approx. $1,393 annually to insure this Saab model, which is just a bit more than the rates for the base model.
Drivers who opt for the priciest Saab 9-5 model, the Aero, are projected to pay around $1,406 annually for auto insurance.
Maintenance Costs for the Saab 9-5
The NADA projects that it will cost about $1,997 to maintain the Saab 9-5 for five years. This vehicle comes with free scheduled maintenance during its first three years or 36,000 miles on the road.
Since most drivers will hit the 36,000 mile mark sometime between the end of the second and the end of the third year of ownership, they will begin paying out of pocket for scheduled maintenance during the third year.
The NADA anticipates third-year maintenance costs of $171, fourth-year costs of $1,730, and a modest fifth-year bill of $97.
Repair Costs for the Saab 9-5
Since the 2011 Saab 9-5 is under a bumper-to-bumper warranty for its first four years or 50,000 miles, out of pocket repair costs generally kick in for most drivers around the beginning of the fourth year of ownership.
The NADA projects that fourth-year repair costs will total about $819, and fifth-year costs will be closer to $1,228, for a total 5-year repair bill of $2,047.

Fuel Costs for the Saab 9-5
Saab 9-5 models average 17 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway, which means that they rank near the bottom of their class in this regard. Their average city mileage is lower than that of all other upscale midsize sedans with the exception of the Cadillac CTS, which gets just 16 mpg.
The 9-5’s fuel economy on the highway is a bit more competitive. It bests the fuel economy ratings of the competing Mercedes-Benz C Class, Volvo S60, and Acura TL by one mile per gallon.
For fuel economy-conscious drivers, there are several hybrid vehicles in this class, including the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, the Chevrolet Volt, and the Lexus HS. The following gasoline-powered upscale midsize sedans also have great fuel economy:
- Audi A4
- Volkswagen CC
- Audi A5
- Volkswagen Eos
Saab 9-5 Safety Ratings
The 2011 Saab 9-5 was ranked a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. To qualify for this designation, the 2011 9-5 had to demonstrate excellent performance on four critical crash tests, and Saab had to install electronic stability control in all 9-5 models.
The crash tests performed by the IIHS included the following:
- Roof strength
- Side impact
- Rear collision
- Front impact
Safety Features for the Saab 9-5
The 9-5 is equipped with front and side head and thorax air bags, active head restraints for the driver and front passenger, and adjustable headrests for the rear passengers.
Headrests and head restraints both help to cushion passengers’ heads to prevent whiplash in rear-impact collisions.
The Saab also features several electronic systems that help drivers maintain control of their vehicles and attempt to correct driver errors like over-steering and under-steering. In addition to electronic stability control, there is also traction control and electronic brake force distribution.
Other important safety equipment that is featured on the 2011 Saab 9-5 includes the following:
- Post-collision safety system
- Engine immobilizer
- Tire pressure monitor
- Fog lights
Saab 9-5 Trim Levels and Pricing
The base model Saab Turbo4 starts at $38,525 with a manual transmission and $39,875 with an automatic transmission.
The manual model accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds, while the automatic model takes 8.2 seconds to reach the same speed. The manual gets 20 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, while the automatic gets 18 city mpg and 28 mpg highway.
Drivers can also upgrade to the Turbo4 Premium, which starts at $43,435. It has the same performance specs as the Turbo4, but its interior is more upscale.
