The 2011 Lexus GS is available in two trims, the GS 350 and the GS 460. The former features a 3.5 liter 6-cylinder engine, while the latter is equipped with a 4.6 liter V8 and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The critical consensus is that the GS 350 offers more than enough power for the typical luxury car driver and reviewers are even more impressed with the GS 460’s performance.
However, they note that its horsepower lags that of more performance-oriented luxury rides like the Jaguar XF.

Lexus GS Auto Insurance Rates
Auto insurance rates for the Lexus GS are a bit higher than its competitors’ average rates.
While Edmunds projects that it will cost the typical driver $10,625 over five years to provide insurance coverage for a Lexus GS, it is expected to cost just $8,811 to insure a BMW 5 Series for the same length of time.
Car insurance rates for the Mercedes Benz E Class and the Volvo S80 fall in the middle, at $9,625 and $9,700, respectively.
Keep in mind, though, that these are average rates. If you have a poor driving record or are a relatively new driver, you should anticipate much higher rates.
Lexus GS Maintenance Costs
Since Lexus does not include complementary scheduled maintenance with its warranty like many other luxury carmakers do, 5-year maintenance costs for the GS are high.
Edmunds projects a total bill of $6,269. This is almost double the cost of maintaining a Mercedes E Class for five years, which is projected to be $3,500. It’s also almost three times the 5-year scheduled maintenance cost for a Volvo S80.
Edmunds estimates that Volvo drivers will pay just $2,204 for maintenance for five years.
To save money on routine maintenance costs, consider a BMW, which includes free scheduled maintenance as long as the 4-year/50,000 mile warranty is good, or a 2011 Volvo, which comes with free scheduled maintenance for five years or 60,000 miles.
Lexus GS Repair Expenses
Repair expenses for the Lexus GS are much lower than its maintenance costs, at $1,027 for five years. They’re even lower than the Volvo S80’s, which are $1,760 for the same time period.
For the GS, typical owners begin paying repair costs during the fourth year of ownership, while Volvo S80 drivers generally don’t pay out of pocket for repairs until the fifth year they own their cars.
This is because the 2011 S80’s basic warranty is one year and 10,000 miles longer than the 2011 GS’, and it covers wear and tear as well as defective parts.
However, the Lexus GS’ warranty is unique among large luxury cars in that it also includes separate 6-year/70,000 mile powertrain coverage.
Most luxury vehicles don’t offer separate powertrain warranties. Although Lexus doesn’t provide free factory scheduled service, it does offer complementary tire balancing and wheel alignment for the first 20,000 miles or one year that the GS is on the road.

Lexus GS Reliability Scores
The Lexus GS’ predicted reliability is rated an 8.0 out of 10 by J.D. Power and Associates. This is the same score that the Mercedes Benz E Class Coupe, the Acura RL, the Cadillac DTS, and the Lincoln MKS received, and the Volvo S80 also scored an 8.0.
The Mercedes Benz E Class sedan, the Cadillac STS, and the BMW 5 Series received scores of 7.0, and the Hyundai Equus scored a 3.0.
When it comes to initial mechanical quality, J.D. Power rated the Lexus GS “Among the Best” for both 2010 and 2011. For 2010, the GS’ overall initial design quality was rated “Better than Most,” and its rating improved to “Among the Best” in 2011.
In 2008, which is the most recent year for which data is available, the GS was rated “Better than Most” for overall dependability. It was rated “Among the Best” for the dependability of its body, interior, features, and accessories, but its powertrain dependability was just “Average.”
Lexus GS Crash Test Scores
The 2011 Lexus GS performed solidly on frontal offset and side-impact testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but its performance on roof strength and whiplash protection tests was less impressive. It only earned a score of “Average” in these areas.
The Audi A6 also earned an “Average” rating for roof strength, and the Acura RL only earned a “Marginal” rating, but all other large luxury cars that were tested earned the highest score of “Good” in this category.
In whiplash protection tests, the only other vehicles that didn’t earn a “Good” rating were the Cadillac DTS and STS, which received “Marginal” and “Poor” scores, respectively.
Most other large luxury vehicles, including the Mercedes E Class, the BMW 5 Series, the Saab 9-5, and the Infiniti M Series, were named “Top Safety Picks” by the IIHS.
Safety is not the Lexus GS’ strong suit, and there are much better safety choices available when it comes to large luxury sedans.
Lexus GS Interior Reviews
Since the Lexus GS is more of a luxury touring car than a sport sedan, interior quality is important.
In this respect, the GS delivers, with a “blissfully silent” cabin, Edmunds reports. Kelley Blue Book describes the GS’ cabin as “exceptionally comfortable,” and Left Lane News reports that the material quality is “top-notch.”
