Many of us have seen the “Aflac duck” on television commercials and laughed at his break-dancing antics. The company has a broad advertising policy which saturates television markets with recognizable commercials.
However, many people may wonder exactly what type of insurance Aflac carries. The commercials always point out that you can have cash for expenses during an illness; does Aflac sell car insurance, as well?
Aflac does not sell direct liability policies for automobiles. However, Aflac does offer a variety of products designed to meet your immediate needs if you or a family member are ever injured in an auto accident. Aflac policies may be a good addition to your regular liability policy, to protect you in the event of injury.

About Aflac Insurance Company
Aflac was founded by the three Amos brothers, Bill, John, and Paul, in Columbus, Georgia, in 1955. At that time, the company was called the American Family Life Assurance Company (these initials provide the name “Aflac”). Although Aflac began life as a life insurance company, the firm quickly capitalized on the growing demand for cancer insurance, which many health insurance policies did not cover.
By 2003, the company had grown to nationwide status, and 98 percent of all policies were issued through payroll deductions for employees. Aflac is often offered as a supplemental benefit to employees to bolster their health insurance with specific cancer coverage.
Aflac currently employs over 8,300 people and has holdings of $8.4 billion. It is still based in Columbus, Georgia, and is one of the largest employers in that city.

How does buying supplemental insurance from Aflac benefit you?
If you are involved in a car accident, and you are at fault, your own insurance company has a limit as to what it will pay for your medical care and other expenses. Once your policy limits are reached, you cannot collect anything else from your company. If the other driver is at fault, his or her policy limits will apply, and anything beyond that will be your responsibility to collect from the driver.
Obviously, many people face extensive medical bills with no real way of collecting from another driver, so you may have many out-of-pocket expenses if you are facing long-term medical treatment or expensive surgery.
Your health insurance may or may not cover these expenses. Some health insurance policies subrogate the claims to the auto insurance company, meaning they will not pay until the auto insurance company’s limits are exhausted. In other cases, the automobile insurance company subrogates the claim to the health insurance company.
Either way, both companies have limits as to what they will pay before denying any more coverage. You could be facing a long battle between the insurance companies to collect for your medical bills.
Aflac coverage can help you avoid this. Aflac supplemental policies pick up where your regular insurance leaves off, and help you close the gap between the policy’s limits and your expenses. Perhaps even more importantly, Aflac offers payments for many things that neither auto insurance nor health insurance will cover.

What does Aflac supplemental insurance cover?
Some of the things that Aflac will cover in the case of an accident are uncovered medical bills, long-term hospital stays, short-term disability benefits, and cash for living expenses. Aflac will cover, through an accident policy, your ambulance ride, emergency room visits, dental work in the case of broken teeth, and intensive care confinement costs.
Many health insurance policies have exceptions for these items, and many auto insurance policies may exclude certain treatments, as well.
The truly unique thing about Aflac is that it pays cash directly to the policyholder.
Rather than trying to figure out dozens of different explanations of benefits from various doctors and healthcare providers, you are sent a check which you cash and spend as you see fit. This also gives you the added benefit of being able to use the cash for emergency expenses such as groceries, rent, or utilities if you are out of work due to an accident.
Many policyholders like the freedom of being able to use the benefits as they see fit, especially as many auto and health insurance policies do not allow customers to receive the funds directly.
In these cases, your hospital bills may be paid, but you may be suffering from a lack of income, and your auto and health insurance companies do not send you anything to help.
Purchasing an Aflac accident policy can be a wise decision, especially if you are the sole provider in your home or if you have little in the way of cash reserves to protect yourself in the event of an accident.
