Facts About Farmers Insurance
Farmers has been around since 1928, when it went into business just before the beginning of the Great Depression.
Farmers Insurance Group offers auto, homeowners, and life insurance from its headquarters in Los Angeles, but the group is actually a wholly-owned subsidiary of Zurich Financial Services, a Switzerland-based company. Farmers Insurance has approximately 20,000 employees who serve over 15 million customers in 41 U.S. states.

Car Insurance Options From Farmers
Farmers Insurance customers can select liability-only coverage, which provides a minimal level of protection from bodily-injury and property-damage claims at an affordable price. A mid-range option is liability and collision coverage, which provides the protection of liability insurance plus coverage if your vehicle is damaged in an accident.
Most drivers opt for full car insurance coverage, which also includes comprehensive insurance that covers liability for a range of damages including damage to your vehicle from weather, fire, theft, and falling objects.
Customers can also purchase medical payments insurance, uninsured motorist coverage, personal injury protection, and more from the Farmers Insurance Company.
Much like any of the major car insurance companies — like Allstate, Nationwide, and Geico — most drivers will not have a problem finding the type of insurance they need with Farmers. The company even offers many additional products/benefits such as:
- Accident Forgiveness
- New Car Pledge
- Personal Umbrella Insurance
- Emergency Roadside Assistance
- Glass Repair Service
- Car Rental Reimbursement
- Customized Equipment Coverage

Farmers Insurance Customer Service Review
Although Farmers Insurance received an overall customer satisfaction rating of “About Average” in the most recent J.D. Power and Associates National Auto Insurance Study of the car insurance industry, this does not guarantee a problem-free customer service experience.
Farmers just squeaked into the average category with an overall score of 757 out of 1,000, placing it solidly in the bottom third of major insurers, and well below the industry’s average customer satisfaction score of 777.
The survey rated Farmers “Below Average” in customer satisfaction with billing and payment, pricing and policy offerings, and it only received a score of “About Average” in the “Contacting the Insurer” and “Overall Satisfaction” categories.
In 2003, Consumer Reports ranked Farmers Insurance dead last for problems with claims processing and delayed payments, and it ranked poorly again in Consumer Reports’ 2006 survey for failing to pay claims in a timely manner. Another survey by J.D. Power and Associates, the 2007 Collision Repair Satisfaction Study, gave Farmers Insurance the lowest possible rating in all categories.
However, it should be noted that Farmers won J.D. Power and Associates’ Call Center Customer Service Excellence award for three years running (2005, 2006 and 2007).
In terms of financial strength, Farmers Insurance is not leading the pack either, but it holds its own. It received a financial strength rating of “A” (Excellent) from A.M. Best, an “A2″ (Good) from Moody’s, and an “AA-” (Very Strong) rating from Standard & Poor’s.
While these results do not rival those of larger insurance companies, these ratings suggest that Farmers Insurance will be financially able to pay your claims.

Is Farmers Insurance a good choice for auto insurance?
While Farmers Insurance is clearly not wowing customers with its pricing, policy offerings, or claims service, it does seem to deliver solid performance when it comes to customers’ ability to contact the company, as evidenced by its J.D. Power and Associates ratings and awards.
Farmers Insurance also offers a standard menu of policy options that will be satisfactory for many customers, and the company’s Accident Forgiveness option is somewhat unique.
Overall, Farmers car insurance may be satisfactory for some customers, but it’s very important to compare your car insurance options regularly, even if you already have a policy. The best way to do this is to enter your ZIP code in the box to compare car insurance quotes.
