Reviewers say that the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is an affordable alternative to luxury sports cars like the Infiniti G37 and the BMW 335i. If these vehicles are out of your price range, you can still get satisfying performance and a classy interior from the Genesis.
However, if it’s really just performance at a reasonable price that you want, muscle cars like the Ford Mustang, the Chevrolet Camaro or the Dodge Challenger might be more your speed.
These retro-styled sports cars can give the base model 2012 Genesis a run for its money on the track, but they lack its sleek modern styling and plush interior.
For 2012, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe features two available engines: a turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder and a 3.8 liter V6. The former cranks out 210 horsepower, while the latter generates 306 horsepower!
Both engines come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, but automatic SHIFTRONIC transmissions with paddle shifters are optional.
You can also beef up your Hyundai Genesis’ performance with an R-Spec or a Track package, both of which include Brembo brakes and a Torsen limited-slip differential.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Auto Insurance
Average auto insurance rates for the 2012 Genesis Coupe should be comparable to what owners pay to insure the 2011 Genesis. The base model costs drivers about $5,531 in insurance premiums over five years, or an average of $1,106 per year.
If you purchase a higher level trim, the impact on your rates won’t be significant: even if you choose the most expensive options package, your premium is unlikely to increase by more than $20 per year.
That rate is very competitive with what you’ll pay to insure other affordable sports cars. For example, it costs most owners about $5,552 to insure a Dodge Challenger, and the average premiums for the Ford Mustang and the Chevy Camaro total approximately $5,700 after five years.
Rates for the Mazda MX-5 Miata are low for its class, at just $5,190 for five years. If you opt instead for a luxury sports car like the Mercedes Benz C Class, the Infiniti G37, or the BMW 335i, you’ll pay closer to $9,000 in car insurance premiums over five years.
Maintenance for the Genesis Coupe
Scheduled maintenance costs for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe are average for its class, at about $3,120 over five years. The first-year scheduled service costs will total just $200, but that figure will increase to $328 the second year and $1,587 the third year.
Maintenance costs head downward during the fourth year of ownership to about $759, and they decline further to $247 for the fifth year.
Scheduled maintenance costs for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe are slightly above average for its class.
Routine service costs for the Dodge Challenger and the Mitsubishi Eclipse are similar to the Genesis Coupe’s, at $3,200 and $3,000, but the NADA projects that costs for the Mazda MX-5 Miata will be just $2,200.
The Camaro and the Mustang are expected to cost only $2,000 to maintain for five years.
Some luxury sports cars, like the Mercedes C Class, have 5-year maintenance costs of over $5,000, but others, like the 3 Series, are more affordable to maintain due to complimentary service plans.

2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Warranty
Compared to most other affordable sports cars, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe has an excellent warranty. It’s covered bumper-to-bumper for five years or 60,000 miles, and its powertrain protection extends for ten years or 100,000 miles.
Most of its competitors’ powertrains are only covered for three years or 36,000 miles, and their limited warranties extend for just five years or 60,000 miles.
The only exception to this is the Mitsubishi Eclipse, which has the same warranty coverage as the Genesis.
Hyundai Genesis Coupe Repairs
Due to its long warranty, you’d expect to pay lower repair costs for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe than for other affordable sports coupes, but this is not the case. The NADA estimates that the Genesis Coupe’s 5-year repair bill will total just over $1,700.
Although that’s less than what you’ll pay in repair expenses for a Chevy Camaro or a Dodge Challenger, estimated 5-year repair costs for the Ford Mustang and the Mazda MX-5 Miata are just $1,627 and $1,422, respectively.
The Eclipse’s 5-year repair costs are nearly identical to those for the Genesis.
Hyundai Genesis Coupe Safety Ratings
Safety testing hasn’t been conducted on the 2011 or 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. The Hyundai Genesis, which is considered a large luxury car, performed well on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash tests.
However, this information does not shed much light on the Genesis Coupe’s safety credentials, since its body type is significantly different.
Hyundai reports that the 2012 Genesis Coupe features electronic stability control and traction control, as well as brake assist, side curtain air bags, and front head restraints for whiplash protection.
Its body design also incorporates front and rear crumple zones to help absorb the force of a crash.
2012 Genesis Coupe Fuel Economy
Equipped with the standard 6-speed manual transmission and the 2.0T engine, the 2012 Genesis Coupe gets 21 city/30 highway mpg. Its city and highway fuel economy stats are decreased by one mile per gallon each if you opt for the 5-speed automatic transmission instead.
The Genesis Coupe’s optional V6 engine gets 17 city mpg and 26 mpg on the highway.
The base model has the best highway fuel economy in its class, and its city mpg rating is just one mile per gallon below the top-ranked MX-5 Miata’s. The Mazda RX-8 has the worst fuel economy, at just 16 city/22 highway mpg.
