For the 2012 model year, the Subaru Impreza will be priced starting at $17,495. Though the 2012 Impreza is redesigned, it still features many of the same strengths that characterized its predecessor.
First, it offers expansive cargo capacity, a versatile interior, and standard all-wheel drive, as well as some of the best handling capabilities in its class. It also includes an extensive menu of standard safety equipment, and is likely to be named a Top Safety Pick, just like the 2011 Impreza.
Though reviewers think that the Impreza provides lots of optional value-add features and a great driving experience, it’s also quite a bit pricier than many of its competitors.
U.S. News and World Report points out that the Mazda 3 offers an equally engaging driving experience for about $2,000 less.
Considering that the base model Impreza skimps on standard features, you may get an equal or better value by purchasing a lower-priced car in a higher trim level.
It’s also worth noting that the Impreza’s fuel economy is poor compared to the competition.

Subaru Impreza Auto Insurance Rates
Since the 2012 Subaru Impreza isn’t available in dealerships yet, average auto insurance premium data isn’t available, either.
However, there’s a good chance that owners of the 2012 Impreza will pay car insurance rates comparable to what owners of the 2011 Impreza pay.
The National Automobile Dealers Association estimates average auto insurance rates of $1,098 per year for this car, which works out to a monthly rate of about $92. Over five years, that will add up to $5,491 in auto insurance costs.
That’s actually quite a low rate for insurance coverage compared to what drivers pay for other affordable small cars.
For instance, it will cost just over $7,000 to insure a Hyundai Elantra for five years, which breaks down to about $118 per month. Auto insurance for a Ford Fiesta is also over $7,000 for five years of coverage, with an estimated monthly rate of $120.
Auto insurance rates for the Toyota Corolla are among the highest in this class, at $7,513 for five years, or $125 per month.
Estimated insurance coverage rates for the Honda Fit and the Mazda 3 are on the low end, at $6,494 and $5,640, respectively.
Subaru Impreza Warranty and Repairs
The 2012 Subaru Impreza’s powertrain warranty is good for 60 months or 60,000 miles, and its limited warranty lasts for 36 months or 36,000 miles.
Most drivers have any necessary repairs covered by the manufacturer for the first two years of ownership, but then have to pay about $369 for repairs during the third year. Fourth- and fifth-year repair costs are usually $615 each.
After five years, your Subaru Impreza’s repair costs will total about $1,600, the NADA reports.
Expected repair costs for the Mazda 3 are a bit higher than the Impreza’s, at $1,627, while the NADA anticipates that it will cost just $1,406 to pay for five years’ worth of Honda Fit repairs.
For both the Ford Fiesta and the Hyundai Elantra, repairs should cost just $1,500 over five years.

Subaru Impreza Maintenance Costs
According to the NADA, maintenance costs for the Subaru Impreza will total about $3,098 over five years.
That includes bills of $156 and $448 for the first- and second-years’ maintenance costs, respectively, as well as $1,562 for the Impreza’s third-year bill.
The fourth-year routine maintenance costs for the Impreza will total about $711, and the fifth-year costs should be just over $200.
Like the Impreza’s, the 5-year maintenance costs for most other affordable small cars are over $3,000. For the Honda Fit, maintenance costs will add up to approximately $3,220 over five years, the NADA explains.
For the Hyundai Elantra, five years of scheduled service visits will total $3,743, and it’s projected to cost about $3,430 to maintain the Toyota Corolla for five years. Ford Fiesta maintenance will cost the typical owner only $2,651 over five years.
Subaru Impreza Safety Ratings
The 2011 Subaru Impreza earned top safety ratings from the insurance industry in front and side collision tests, as well as the rear-impact and rollover collision tests.
The 2012 model is expected to perform similarly well, since its design is very close to the 2011 model’s.
The 2011 Impreza also performed well in the federal government’s crash tests, earning 4/5 stars in rear and side impact tests, as well as rollover testing. In front impact crash tests, it earned 5/5 stars.
As far as features go, the Impreza’s standard all-wheel drive sets it apart from the competition, and could make it a top choice for drivers who live in colder climates.
The Impreza also features standard electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and seven air bags.
Subaru Impreza Fuel Economy
The Subaru Impreza’s 20 city mpg fuel economy rating means that it ranks dead last among all 22 affordable small cars on the market.
The 2012 Hyundai Accent, the 2012 Fiat 500, and the 2012 Toyota Yaris all get 30 city mpg, and all of the small, affordable green cars on the market get at least 31 city mpg.
In fact, the Honda Insight gets 40 city mpg, and the all-electric Smart Fortwo uses no fuel at all.
The Impreza doesn’t do any better when it comes to highway fuel economy, either. It gets just 27 mpg on the highway, while the 2012 Hyundai Accent and the 2012 Elantra both get 40 highway mpg.
The Fiat 500, the Toyota Yaris, and the Ford Fiesta also offer strong highway fuel economy ratings, at 38 mpg. The Honda Insight hybrid gets 43 highway mpg.
