Reviewers say that the 2011 Acura MDX is a solid all-around performer for families and individuals who are looking for power, handling, passenger space, and cargo capacity all in one place.

U.S. News and World Report says that this luxurious SUV’s first- and second-row seats are comfortable for adults. While its third-row seats are not, the third row can accommodate up to three child seats.

With the third-row seat folded down, the Acura MDX also boasts one of the largest cargo areas in its class, second only to the Volvo XC90. Owners using the cargo area will also appreciate the convenience of the MDX’s power tailgate.

In rankings by U.S. News, the 2011 MDX comes in first out of the 18 luxury midsize SUVs that are reviewed, although it does share this honor with the Lexus RX 350.

This high rating comes from the fact that the MDX meets the needs of SUV drivers in terms of passenger capacity and cargo space, while still appeasing owners’ cravings for a vehicle that’s fun to drive.

Edmunds’ reviewer says that the 2011 MDX is “rewarding” to drive, and the reviewer from Cars.com describes its cornering as effortless. Businessweek’s reviewer reports that the MDX’s performance can hold its own against BMW’s competing X5 SUV.

The MDX’s power comes from a 3.7 liter V6 engine that generates 300 horsepower. This powerful engine is governed by a smooth 6-speed transmission, which reviewers like Autoblog say is a noticeable improvement over the 5-speed gearbox found in older models.

The MDX accelerates to 60 mph in just 7.0 seconds, making it faster than competitors like the Porsche Cayenne and the RX 350.

You can read on to discover how the MDX compares to other SUVs when it comes to auto insurance rates and other ownership costs.

How much is auto insurance for the Acura MDX?

Compared to those of its competitors, auto insurance rates for the Acura MDX are about average.

Edmunds’ consumer research data indicates that the average MDX owner will pay roughly $1,764 annually to insure this luxury SUV. This is about the same as what owners of the BMW X5 and the Lexus RX 350 can expect to pay.

Edmunds anticipates that for the Mercedes Benz M Class SUV, owners can expect to pay a bit less. Estimated auto insurance premiums for this luxury midsize SUV are just $1,608 annually.

The competing Volkswagen Touareg is one of the more expensive luxury SUVs to insure, with estimated rates of over $1,800 per year.

Maintenance for the Acura MDX

Some luxury carmakers, like BMW, include free scheduled maintenance in their warranties, but Acura does not.

According to Edmunds, Acura MDX owners will pay about $4,329 in scheduled maintenance costs during the initial five years they drive their vehicles.

Surprisingly, the BMW X5 is expected to incur slightly higher scheduled maintenance costs than the MDX, roughly $4,545 over five years.

For both vehicles, the majority of these costs are expected to come during the third through fifth years of ownership. In the case of the X5, most drivers’ warranties have expired by this point, so they still have to pay for this routine maintenance out of pocket.

Edmunds expects that the Mercedes M Class will be much more expensive to maintain than the MDX, with estimated 5-year bills of over $6,700. The Lexus RX 350 is also expected to cost a bit more to maintain, approximately $4,825 for five years.

On the flip side, the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg is expected to cost just $3,673 to maintain over a 5-year period.

Repair Costs for the Acura MDX

The Acura MDX features a 4-year, 50,000 mile limited warranty that is standard among midsize luxury SUVs. However, it also comes with a 6-year, 70,000 mile powertrain warranty, which is unusual for a vehicle in this class.

BMWs and Mercedes do not come with separate powertrain warranties. Lexus is one of the only other luxury carmakers besides Acura to offer this perk.

What are the best selling cars in America?

Edmunds’ 5-year repair cost estimates for the Acura MDX are roughly $1,000.

This figure is comparable to the anticipated 5-year repair costs for the Touareg and the RX 350, but it is much lower than Edmunds’ repair expense estimates for the M Class and the X5.

Initial 5-year repairs for the M Class will cost owners approximately $2,611, and 5-year repairs for the BMW X5 will cost drivers even more, around $3,200.

Fuel Expenses for the Acura MDX

In terms of car insurance rates, repair costs, and maintenance expenses, the Acura MDX is competitive with other highly ranked midsize SUVs.

The MDX’s fuel economy is not bad, either, but it certainly doesn’t make the MDX stand out among its peers.

The MDX shares its city fuel economy rating of 16 mpg with eight other midsize luxury SUVs, including Volkswagen’s Touareg, BMW’s X5 and X6, and the Infiniti FX.

The 2011 Acura MDX gets 21 highway mpg. This is higher than what competitors like the Mercedes Benz M Class have to offer, but it is quite a bit less than the 25 highway mpg that the Lexus RX 350 delivers.

Other good bets for highway fuel economy in the midsize luxury SUV class include the Volkswagen Touareg, the Infiniti FX, and the Lincoln MKT.

Acura MDX Safety Ratings

The 2011 MDX received the highest safety rating of “Good” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for front, side, and rear crash protection.

The roof strength test, which assesses how well the vehicle protects occupants in rollovers, was not administered. The federal government has not yet crash tested the 2011 MDX.
